Spurk Golf Mat Review

The nearest thing I’ve found to playing off proper grass during those winter months when courses insist on fairway mats.

Value

9.0/10Very Good
This is the closest I’ve ever come to feeling like I’m playing off grass in winter when courses insist on mats. It’s stable, well made, and a genuine step up from the usual flimsy fairway mats.

The Spurk Golf Mat is the nearest I’ve ever experienced to playing off grass in those winter months when many courses insist on golfers using mats to protect the fairways out of season.

What makes the difference is that it doesn’t feel like a compromise in the way most winter mats do. You can put it down, stand on it to set it, and then play your shot with real confidence that it’s not going to move or spoil the strike.

Pros

  • Closest thing I’ve found to playing off grass in winter
  • Exceptional build quality
  • Stable base that does not move during the shot
  • Sloping spikes make setup and removal easy
  • Latest version includes a rear lip for fat shots
  • Short pile version is the one most golfers seem to prefer

Things to Know

  • I strongly recommend buying the carry bag as well
  • There are two finishes, so pick the one you actually want
  • It’s a premium mat rather than a throwaway winter accessory

Why I Rate It So Highly

  • It gives a much more natural strike than typical fairway mats.
  • The spikes lock it into the turf so it stays put.
  • It feels solid and confidence-inspiring under your feet.
  • Build quality is excellent and it should last for years if used properly.
  • The updated rear lip is a smart improvement for heavier strikes.
  • It’s one of those products that genuinely improves a frustrating winter golf problem.

What Makes It Different

The single biggest advantage is the sloping spikes in the bottom of the mat. Simply place the mat on the ground, stand on it to push the spikes in, and then play your shot. The mat does not move at all, which gives you a stable base and makes a big difference to confidence and strike quality.

Once you’ve hit the ball, you just pick the mat up from the back and the spikes pop out of the ground. It’s quick, practical, and far less fiddly than mats that shift around or need constant repositioning.

Build Quality and Practical Use

Build quality is exceptional and, used properly, this is the sort of mat that should last for years. The latest version also includes a lip at the back to stop golfers catching the rear edge if they hit a fat shot, which is a smart upgrade.

It includes an elastic loop for attaching it to your bag between shots, but I’d strongly recommend buying the Spurk carry bag as well. It’s quicker and easier to get the mat in and out, protects your golf bag from mud, and feels much more secure than relying on the loop alone.

Strike Quality About as close as I’ve found to hitting from real grass in winter conditions.
Stability The spikes make a huge difference and stop the mat shifting at impact.
Durability Properly built and feels like something you’ll use for years.
Ease of Use Quick to set down, easy to remove, and straightforward during a round.

Which Version I’d Choose

Spurk make these mats in two different finishes. There’s a less popular one that emulates light rough, but everyone I know uses the shorter pile version. That’s the one I’d recommend unless you have a very specific reason to prefer the rough-style finish.

My Verdict

Winter fairway mats are usually something golfers tolerate rather than enjoy, but this is one of the few that actually feels like a proper solution rather than an unavoidable compromise.

If your course insists on mats in winter and you want the closest thing to playing off grass, I think this is an excellent buy.

Worth Buying?

If you’re fed up with winter mats that move, feel flimsy, or ruin your strike, the Spurk Golf Mat is well worth a look.
